ABOUT US:

The GRDO delivers affordable and accessible recreational sports programs for children and youth ages 4 to 14 who may face financial, cultural, or social barriers in seven neighbourhoods of the City of Ottawa (Blossom Park, Orleans, Blackburn Hamlet, Beacon Hill, Pineview, Carson Grove, and Cyrville). Our programs are a perfect first taste of various sports for young children, and a comfortable environment for any child to try a sport they haven’t tried before. For youth ages 14-18, we offer a yearly Youth-Leaders-in-Training (LIT) program and volunteer opportunities.

The GRDO also provides volunteer opportunities for community members, post-secondary students, and youth leaders. We provide mentorship and guidance in and outside of our programs to get children and youth on a healthy, safe, and productive path of personal success and community building.

GRDO’s MANDATE
• To provide low cost recreation and skill building sports programs to children who have not had the benefit of participating in community recreation activities due to financial, cultural or social barriers.

GRDO’s HISTORY
The Gloucester Recreation Development Organization was started as a pilot project in March 1993, with an initial grant from the Ministry of Citizenship (now known as the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services). After three successful years, it was incorporated as the Gloucester Recreation Development Organization (the GRDO), a not-for-profit community group, on June 12, 1996. Since then, the organization has expanded to running more programs, in more areas, reaching more people than ever!
